unblending

What is unblending?

In Rupert Spira’s non-dual teaching, “unblending” is considered the primary methodology for overcoming psychological suffering and discovering who you truly are.

What is Unblending?

For most people, awareness is constantly blended with the content of experience—meaning we collapse our identity into our temporary thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and emotional states. Instead of knowing ourselves as pure awareness, we say and feel: “I am anxious,” “I am depressed,” or “I am hurt”.

Unblending is the process of taking a step back to disentangle your essential self (awareness) from whatever temporary mental or emotional content is arising. It is recognizing: “I am fundamentally awareness—I am not what I am aware of”.

How Unblending Works: The Screen vs. The Movie

Spira uses the analogy of a movie and a cinema screen:

  • The Content (The Movie): Your thoughts, emotions, memories, and physical pain are like the changing scenes of a movie—sometimes violent, sorrowful, or chaotic.
  • Awareness (The Screen): Your underlying being is like the screen upon which the movie is projected.

When you unblend, you realize that just as a fire in a movie cannot burn the screen, no emotion, trauma, or mental state can tarnish or hurt your fundamental being. Unblending exposes a depth within you that is whole, unblemished, and has never been traumatized.

The Direct Exercise to Unblend

Spira outlines a direct way to practice unblending in daily life:

  1. Pause: Whenever you feel caught in agitation, sadness, or reactivity, pause and interrupt the mental narrative.
  2. Inquire: Ask yourself: “What is the nature of the awareness that is aware of this current experience?” or “Who or what is knowing this feeling?”
  3. Shift Identity: Recognize that “hurt/sadness” is merely what you are experiencing in this moment, not what you are.

Two Steps to Enlightenment

Spira clarifies that unblending is a crucial two-step progression:

  1. Step 1 (Unblending): Stepping back from experience to realize “I am the witness/awareness, not the thought or feeling”.
  2. Step 2 (Recognition): Discovering the inherent nature of that awareness—that it is naturally peaceful, unlimited, and fulfilled.

How does Spira apply unblending?

Rupert Spira applies unblending across daily experiences, emotional healing, relationships, and spiritual understanding by disentangling pure awareness from the temporary content of experience.

Here is how he applies it in practice:

1. The Daily Practice of Pausing

  • Interrupting Mental States: Whenever you feel caught in agitation, sadness, or distress, Spira advises simply pausing.
  • Direct Self-Inquiry: Ask yourself: “What is the nature of the awareness with which I am aware of my current experience?”.
  • Shifting Attention: This question turns attention away from temporary thoughts and emotions (the “movie”) and back to the quiet experience of being (the “screen”).

2. In Relationships and Interpersonal Conflict

  • Stepping Back During Arguments: During a conflict, taking a step back from reactive thoughts and hurt feelings allows you to rest in the peace of pure being.
  • Transforming Responses: By speaking and acting from this unblended place rather than a reactive mind, the tone of the conversation changes, preventing resentment and escalation.
  • Recognizing Shared Being: Unblending helps you realize that behind differing minds and conditioned opinions, you and your partner share the exact same underlying being, which Spira describes as the true essence of love.

3. Processing Emotional Hurt and Trauma

  • Reframing Identity: When feeling emotional pain, Spira applies unblending by shifting from “I am hurt” or “I am depressed” to recognizing “Hurt or depression is what I am experiencing, not what I am”.
  • Standing as the Witness: Rather than identifying with or suppressing the feeling, you stand as the open “space” or “witness” in which the feeling arises, which prevents you from feeding the emotion with belief.
  • Reaching Unblemished Being: Unblending reveals a dimension within you that is whole, untarnished, and has never been traumatized by any past event, providing the ultimate healing.

4. As the Foundation for Spiritual Recognition

  • The First Step of the Direct Path: Spira frames unblending as the essential first step on the non-dual path—realizing “I am fundamentally awareness, not what I am aware of”.
  • Gateway to Peace: Once unblended from mental content, you can recognize the inherent nature of that awareness as naturally peaceful, boundless, and fulfilled.
