What about mind?
NotebookLM based on this video:
In non-dual teachings, the mind can be defined as the activity or modulation of consciousness, consisting primarily of thinking and perceiving (along with feelings, emotions, images, and sensations).
Spira highlights several key characteristics of the mind:
- Necessary for Objective Experience: The mind—specifically through thought and perception—is required to have objective experience of the world.
- Dynamic and Changing vs. Constant: Unlike pure consciousness/being, which is infinite, unchanging, and un-evolving, the mind is constantly changing, temporary, and evolving.
- The Screen vs. The Movie: Spira compares consciousness to a screen and the mind’s activities (thoughts, feelings, perceptions) to the movie playing on that screen. Religiously or traditionally, the individual mind is often referred to as the “soul”.
- The Source of Suffering (“Blending“): Psychological suffering arises when we blend our sense of identity with the mind—deriving who we are solely from temporary thoughts, emotions, and narratives rather than recognizing the underlying, peaceful awareness in which those mental contents arise.
