What is nonduality (according to Salvadore Poe)?

Salvadore Poe defines nonduality not as an intellectual philosophy or mental concept, but as the direct, lived reality that there is no separation between yourself and life.

Here are the central aspects of his teaching on nonduality:

1. Coming “Full Circle” (Beyond “Only Awareness”)

Poe cautions against a common trap on the spiritual path where seekers realize pure awareness and conclude, “I am only awareness, and the body or world is just an illusion”. He calls this view “halfway around the circle”—getting stuck in the absolute to escape suffering.

True nonduality comes full circle: you realize you are neither only awareness nor only the body—you are all of it.

2. Shiva and Shakti (Unmanifest and Manifest)

Poe uses the classical concepts of Shiva and Shakti to illustrate how nonduality unites the unmanifest and the manifest:

  • Shiva represents the unmanifest, quiet, timeless space of pure aware being.
  • Shakti represents the kinetic movement of that pure being into forms—thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and the physical world.

Nonduality means Shiva and Shakti are two aspects of the exact same reality. Form is simply source taking on temporary appearance.

3. “There Is Only the Self” (The Ocean and Wave)

Rather than asserting “there is no self,” Poe prefers the phrasing “there’s only the Self”.

He uses the analogy of the ocean and its waves:

  • A wave on the surface of the ocean is not a separate entity; it is ocean waving.
  • In the same way, your body-mind and personal life are source appearing as a wave. You do not need to reject, kill, or transcend the wave; you simply recognize that its substance is ocean.

4. Direct Being vs. Philosophical Concepts

Poe emphasizes that nonduality cannot be reached by riding the “philosophical carousel” or accumulating intellectual concepts. Mentally labeling your experience as “nondual” or “awareness” is still just mind activity.

Real nonduality is living freedom—resting directly as pure aware being prior to all labels, concepts, and definitions.
